The North Atlantic right whale is a critically endangered species of baleen whale found primarily off the eastern coast of North America, from Canada to the southeastern United States. These whales are large, reaching up to 50 feet in length and weighing around 70 tons. They have a distinctive black body with no dorsal fin and prominent callosities (rough patches of skin) on their heads. North Atlantic right whales primarily feed on zooplankton, particularly copepods, by skimming the water’s surface. With fewer than 400 individuals remaining, the species faces serious threats from ship collisions, fishing gear entanglements, and habitat loss. Conservation efforts are ongoing.
