Southern right whales are large baleen whales found primarily in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly off the coasts of Argentina, South Africa, and Australia. They can grow up to 50 feet long and weigh up to 70 tons. Characterized by their thick blubber, dark gray or black bodies, and white patches on their bellies, these whales are known for their distinctive callosities—rough patches of skin on their heads. They feed on tiny plankton, krill, and other small marine creatures. Southern right whales are critically endangered due to past hunting, but conservation efforts have helped their populations recover in recent decades.
